Kolpin Gun Boot Story -

"Five years ago I was on a mule deer hunt by myself in central/eastern Utah in high desert terrain. During the hunt, I used my reliable old Kawasaki Bayou 300 to get up into the higher elevations in the rolling somewhat mountainous terrain. I was hunting with a Browning .300 Mag which I carried on the right side of the ATV in a Kolpin hard case..." On the third day of the hunt, I ventured 2-3 miles up an ATV-type trail that subsequently turned into more of a horse path. I had to turn around eventually when it got too treacherous due to the incline.

On the way back down, I was pushing the edge of tipping over, but I thought proceeding cautiously, when I ran over a small, 2 inch diameter log on the uphill side of the trail. Before I knew what had happened, the ATV rolled about 90 degrees to the right directly above a 24” diameter rock. Fortunately, the Kolpin case absorbed the entire brunt of the spill and I was able, after saying a short prayer that I was alive, to work my way out, bruised but otherwise uninjured, from under the ATV that was still at about a 80 degree sideways angle, and the case.

As I reconstructed the situation later, I realized that had the Kolpin gun case not been attached, I would have broken my right femur, based on where the ATV/gun case rested and where the large rock was. I am also quite certain that internal damage to the leg would have caused significant, if not fatal, bleeding. I would have not been able to extricate myself from the situation since lifting or “righting” the ATV was not possible. I had seen no other hunters in this area that day and would most likely not have made it down off the mountain had I not been lucky—rolling directly onto the gun case-- with the way the accident happened.

I was quite surprised later as I assessed the “damage”. The ATV was unmarked and the Kolpin case had no more than a small scuff mark on it, despite having absorbed the entire 650 pound violent turn-over. Later when I checked the Browning, I found that it not affected by the impact and still shot true.

This is a true story and I wanted to pass it on to show, I guess, that there are other benefits from having a good case, besides carrying and protecting your rifle."
